Five Essential Books to Adorn Your Hamptons Coffee Table
PETER MARINO: Ten MODERN HOUSES
In Peter Marino’s first compendium of private, residential projects, the architect (and Southampton resident) selects 10 of his favorite homes he’s created over the past decade, two of which happen to be in his East End village, and another in nearby Sagaponack. Taken together, they highlight his interest in creating new combinations of stone, wood, metal, and glass to de!ne spaces that are visually light and open, seeming almost to disappear into the landscape—whether that’s a bayside vista or a rolling cornfield. (Phaidon)
THE LADIES’ VILLAGE IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY COOKBOOK
With a foreword by ultimate Hamptons hostess Martha Stewart, this recipe collection features seasonal favorites using fresh farmstand ingredients from East End denizens including Barefoot Contessa host Ina. Garten (crunchy iceberg salad with creamy blue cheese), artist Laurie Anderson (birdhouse potatoes with brussels sprouts, snap peas, and mushrooms), and fashion luminaries Ralph and Ricky Lauren (rum-laced brownies). Proceeds benefit the Ladies’ Village Improvement Society, a 129-year-old nonprofit that preserves the swan pond, windmills, and other charming historical landmarks. (Rizzoli)
MONTAUK SURF JOURNALS
In 1978, the late artist Peter Beard invited surfer Tony Caramanico to move into one of the guesthouses at Thunderbolt Ranch, his sprawling Montauk property. The only requirement was that Caramanico keep a diary. It was the beginning of a Montaigne-like daily habit of self-documentation that comprises an astounding 16,000 volumes. Anthologized for the first time, they are filled with notes on the day’s waves, newspaper clippings, and colorful rubbings that offer a window into the life of a pioneering !gure in East Coast surf culture. Caftans: From Classical to Camp
Vintage whisperer Cameron Silver offers a breezy treatise on the caftan’s timeless allure, explaining how the easy-flowing garment that emerged thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia looks just as effortlessly glamorous today whether your plans this month involve going hard on the charity gala circuit or just lounging poolside. He’s also curated a colorful selection of 1970s caftans from his LA shop Decades for the Balmain pop-up at The Pridwin Hotel & Cottages on Shelter Island, open through August 15. (Vendome Press)
WALK WITH ME HAMPTONS
In editor-turned-photographer Susan Kaufman’s follow-up to Walk With Me: New York, a collection of streetscape photographs snapped on her daily walks around Manhattan, she turns her attention to her favorite places to stroll (and drive) when she’s summering at her quaint 1890s shingle-style cottage in Amagansett. From a perfectly preserved early 1700s saltbox in East Hampton to a working dairy in Water Mill, her snaps reveal the Hamptons’ indelible charm. (Abrams Image)
