When it comes to the new year, there are many facets that we may focus on as we revamp our lives and set our sights on a “new us” that we want to embody. Perhaps for some, the focus is on health and wellness. For others, it is possibly getting that job promotion or switching careers altogether. Or maybe it’s making over your physical appearance with more intentional self-care and beauty routines.

For me? I can’t help but overanalyze all of life’s categories and set new goals across the board (IYKYK). But, of course, here at GRAZIA, we have an *unbiased* favoritism towards fashion and beauty goals, which is why we’re always here for a little aesthetic refresh come January. With 2025 now in full swing, we are well underway in taking the necessary steps towards our new year goals and resolutions — and you know that means we’re here to help you do the same.

When it comes to beauty, we believe the best way to step into a brand new you is with a new hair color and cut. There’s truly no better feeling than walking into the salon as the old 2024 you and walking out as the new 2025 you (a bit dramatic? Maybe, but we’re here for it). When you refresh your physical appearance, it gives you the boost of confidence that everyone deserves. And in return, it helps you step into a new version of yourself: the version of you that you want to be in the new year, and that you now have a physical reminder of every time you look in the mirror.

But we know that sometimes a full-fledged makeover can be just as daunting as it is exciting, as a million questions begin to cross your mind: Do I do a slight refresh to my current look, or should I full-send into the new year with a total transformation? What exactly are the it-girl hair trends for 2025? How do I know if a trending color and cut will suit my face shape and natural coloring?

We visited the recently opened Jerome Lordet Salon in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood to talk to hair expert Jerome Lordet himself, along with Miley Cyrus’ hair colorist, Alexis Yoshico, to get their takes on the biggest hair trends of 2025 (and to answer all of your dire questions about transforming your look this year). And because we love you, and we love a great salon, you already know we tried out one of these 2025 hair trends ourselves, straight from Lordet’s and Yoshico’s chairs.

GRAZIA: What was your inspiration behind the signature cuts of 2024 like the French Bob and Italian Bob, and how do you see these styles evolving (or completely changing) in 2025?

JEROME LORDET: The 2024 signature cuts, like the French Bob and Italian Bob, blend cultural influences with modern elegance. The French Bob captures a chic, Parisian vibe — slightly longer than the classic bob, with soft layers for texture and versatility. The Italian Bob, in contrast, is sharp and precise, reflecting bold sophistication with clean lines and angular shapes that add volume and richness. Looking ahead to 2025, I see these styles evolving with more personalization. The focus will shift to individuality, with more texture and movement, allowing for dynamic, multidimensional bobs that feel both structured and flexible. It’s all about tailoring the cut to suit different hair types and lifestyles, with less emphasis on uniformity and more on adaptable shapes.

GRAZIA: With your experience in editorial and runway hairstyling, what trends from the fashion world do you predict will dominate everyday haircuts this coming year?

LORDET: One major trend will be the move toward effortless sophistication. We’re going to see more cuts that blend structure with movement — like undone bobs or soft layers that give the hair a more lived-in, dynamic feel. Think of it as ‘chic, but with ease.’ The runway is embracing textures that feel real, not overly styled, and that will translate into everyday looks. Another trend I see dominating is the modern shag. It’s been gaining momentum on the runway, and I think it will become a staple for everyday wear. The shag works well on all hair types, offering a fresh, edgy vibe with layers that create volume and movement. It’s versatile and adaptable, allowing people to make it their own. I predict a rise in more customized cuts that allow for the beauty of natural texture to shine through, with an emphasis on enhancing rather than manipulating.

GRAZIA: How do you approach customizing a haircut to suit someone’s facial structure, lifestyle, and personality, while staying with the current beauty trends?

LORDET: My approach is all about balance while staying true to modern sensibilities. I begin by assessing the face shape: angular features often pair well with softer layers, while round faces benefit from sharper lines or longer shapes to add definition. The goal is always to highlight the best features — whether that’s accentuating cheekbones or creating harmony around the jawline. Lifestyle is another key consideration. A busy professional may need a low-maintenance cut that’s quick to style but still polished, while someone more experimental might prefer a versatile, dynamic shape. Ultimately, personality drives the final choice. I take into account the client’s personal style, their confidence, and how they wish to express themselves through their hair. For someone who loves bold, edgy looks, I may opt for something more dramatic, while a classic, refined look might suit someone who prefers understated elegance. I always stay current with beauty trends, but my focus is on adapting them to the individual. Trends should enhance, not overshadow, so my goal is to create a style that feels fresh, modern, and uniquely tailored to each person.

GRAZIA: What role do cultural influences, like pop culture or global fashion, play in shaping haircut trends? For instance, how did White Lotus change the bob game?

LORDET: Cultural influences play a significant role in shaping haircut trends. Hair is often a reflection of the times and the media that surrounds us. TV shows, movies, and music culture have an undeniable impact — when a character or celebrity with a striking hairstyle gets attention, it’s almost certain that people will want to recreate that look.

Take White Lotus, for example. Lucia’s bob, worn by Simona Tabasco, became an instant icon, popularizing the ‘Italian bob’ hairstyle. It’s a relaxed, textured, and slightly messy bob that gives the classic bob a modern, Mediterranean twist. This fresh take made the bob feel cool and stylish again, with a more effortless, lived-in aesthetic. This led to a surge in requests for similar cuts at salons and a renewed interest in the bob overall; essentially making the bob look cool and stylish again with a more relaxed, ‘effortless’ aesthetic. Similarly, Emma Stone’s short, tousled pixie at the Golden Globes added to the rise of chic, effortless short haircuts. Both looks, with their blend of sophistication and ease, show how media and celebrity influence can quickly turn a hairstyle into a popular trend.

GRAZIA: What are the most exciting or bold haircut trends you’re seeing and/or predicting for 2025, and how can someone incorporate these styles while still keeping them low-maintenance?

LORDET: I’m seeing some bold and exciting trends, with bangs making a comeback. Whether it’s curtain bangs, straight-across fringes, or choppy, textured bangs, they’re a great way to refresh a hairstyle with instant impact. Curtain bangs, in particular, will be big, offering a soft, face-framing look that blends well with various haircuts. They give a bit of edge while still feeling feminine and wearable. To keep these bold bangs low-maintenance, it’s all about embracing natural texture. For curtain bangs, you can let them air-dry for a soft, effortless look or lightly blow-dry them for volume and movement. Straight-across bangs can be kept simple with a quick trim every few weeks and minimal styling — just a bit of texturizing spray or dry shampoo for that lived-in feel. The key is to choose bangs that fit with your natural hair texture and your daily routine. Whether air-dried or styled with minimal effort, these bangs offer a bold statement without a ton of upkeep.

2025 Hair Color Trends: Interview with Alexis Yoshico

GRAZIA: What are the top hair color techniques or shades that you predict will be huge this coming year, and what makes them stand out?

ALEXIS YOSHICO: I think hair color is shifting away from the extreme contrasts of the past and moving towards a more natural, organically flattering shade. For brunettes, rich tones like espresso and dark chocolate are popular. The hair looks healthy, polished, and chic. For blondes, I’ve been noticing more warmth instead of the icy platinum shades we’ve seen in recent years. Colors like champagne blonde, honey blonde, butter blonde, are soft, fresh, and sophisticated without being too ‘cool.’ Creamy, buttery tones and honey hues offer a more natural, organic, raw look.

What makes these shades stand out is that they are never the same. You can customize the warmth, the way you like it. They feel less trend-driven and more about bringing out the best version of the person.

GRAZIA: How do you ensure a new color complements a client’s natural features/coloring and haircut? Are there any new tools or methods you’re excited about for creating seamless color looks?

YOSHICO: When it comes to ensuring a new color complements a client’s natural features, I believe in a holistic approach. I don’t push a particular look but I listen to them and actually care about what they’re hoping to get. It starts with understanding their personality, lifestyle, and what makes them confident yet comfortable. I take time to know who they really are so I can suggest shades that bring their beauty out in a way that they can feel like who they really are.

As for new techniques, smudge or shadow roots. This technique has been around for a while as a low-maintenance option, and while some might say the trend is over, I bet it’s not going anywhere anytime soon; it’s back. The technique is perfect for creating a softer, more natural transition between your natural root color and lighter ends. It allows the hair to look lived-in, not too done, but still polished. It’s ideal for clients who don’t have the flexibility for monthly (or even bimonthly) touch-ups. It is easy to grow out, there’s no harsh line to deal with, and your hair always looks well taken care of. The goal is to make sure the color complements who they (you) are, rather than just following trends. It’s about creating a look that aligns with their personal style.

GRAZIA: Can you explain the difference between trend-driven colors versus timeless shades, and how someone might decide which is right for them?

YOSHICO: Trend-driven colors are more about fun, experimentation, and of course embracing the latest fashions. These colors are about what’s hot at the moment, but they could be more temporary in a way, and often more maintenance. Timeless shades are classic and versatile like rich brunettes, golden blondes, and deep reds. These colors are always chic no matter the season or trend.

When it comes to choosing between them, I believe the right color really depends on how you’re feeling, your mood, and vibes. If you’re in the mood for something fresh, fun, and experimental, a trend-driven color might be for you. But if you want something that feels comfortable, flattering, and low-maintenance, timeless shades are probably better for you. The best choice is one that makes you feel like the best version of yourself, whatever your heart (and hair) is telling you that day.

GRAZIA: You’ve worked with high-profile clients like Miley Cyrus — how does working with celebrities influence the hair color trends you create or foresee for everyday clients in 2025?

YOSHICO: I’m not sure if working with celebrities will directly influence hair color trends for everyday clients, but there are so many trends to follow that it can be overwhelming. I do hope people are influenced by the idea that if celebrities can wear whatever color they choose, from bold, unconventional shades to subtle, natural tones, or the same for the past 10 years, so can you. Hair color should be about personal expression, everyone deserves to experiment (if they want), or/and wear the hair color that they feel the most confident in.

GRAZIA: What advice would you give to someone who wants to embrace a bold hair color transformation but is nervous about commitment or maintenance?

YOSHICO: Just go for it! But before jumping in, it’s important to have a good conversation with a professional about what’s doable for your natural hair, your budget, and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with. Have them guide you through the process to know what to expect and what’s involved in keeping up with a bold transformation.

The decision should be based on what feels right for you. If you’re still nervous, ask your stylist if there’s a way to ease into the color or a way to gradually transition back to your original look if you don’t feel like you are in it. Make sure you’re fully informed about what you want to know and you can make the best decision for you.

Take your time, but if you’re feeling adventurous, I’d say go for it!

GRAZIA‘s Jerome Lordet Salon Experience

When you walk into the Jerome Lordet Salon, you’re basically entering the most chic hangout on the Upper East Side. Not only is there a dedicated counter to swap your coat for a salon cape (we see you, coat check), but there are also changing rooms to put on your cape and take off your bulky winter sweaters for ultimate comfort during your salon experience. You’re then escorted to your styling chair and treated like a VIP from start to finish (including at the shampoo sinks, where you are seated in reclining, massaging shampoo chairs).

The staff is some of the friendliest New Yorkers we’ve met, and a familial feel fills the air. Here, you seem like one of the elite, but you never feel out of place. The typical hair salon chatter echoes across the room as expertise and master skills surround you in every direction. Men and women gleam with happiness from a fresh cut and color as they take on the new year with more confidence and pride than when they walked in — and I was one of them.

During my appointment, I wanted to, of course, take the advice from Lordet and Yoshico and put their wisdom and predictions for 2025 hair trends to the test. First up was my color. After deciding I wanted to stay within the blonde realm, Yoshico worked her magic, mixing up a warm, honey blonde shade — a departure from my previous more cool-toned blonde. She painted on the trending warm honey hue, adding a money piece and the smudge roots technique, to allow my natural dirty blonde roots to grow out with a more natural-looking ombré effect.

Yoshico is a true artist when it comes to her craft, ensuring her work not only represents her expertise but also takes into consideration her canvas (AKA her client). She made sure to stick to the vision I had in my mind and the coloring I preferred while still offering her sought-after advice and applying her magic touch to the final shade choice, resulting in a masterpiece.

Over at the styling chair, Lordet and I decided to take my grown-out bob a bit shorter. He created soft layers to give my hair a more organic yet dynamic feel — or “chic, but with ease” as he calls the upcoming hair trend — finishing off the cut with curtain bangs to go along with my new, honey blonde hair color. To say Lordet has perfected the undone, layered bob would be an understatement. Classically trained in France and boasting over 25 years of experience in NYC’s editorial and runway scenes, he has truly honed his craft to perfection.

I witnessed his mastery firsthand as he executed a flawless cut that was not only expertly tailored to my features but also incredibly easy to wear and style — truly showcasing his unparalleled talent. Lordet’s hands moved through my hair light as a feather, perfectly cutting each strand with ease and precision, creating allure right before my very eyes.
