Reimagining Classic Movies: Modern Actors for Iconic Roles

Remakes of classic movies are a major part of the Hollywood movie industry whether we like it or not. It seems none are safe from being remade for modern audiences. The various social media platforms available to cinephiles allow them to speculate on the best casting calls for movies that may or may not ever get remakes.

So here we’ve reimagined iconic starring roles from classic films with contemporary Hollywood talents. Could they fill in the shoes of some of the most legendary performances to ever grace the big screen? Read below to learn why we think they could!

North by Northwest (1959)

Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller is considered one of the greatest of its genre. It stars Cary Grant as the suave and sophisticated advertising executive Roger Thornhill who gets mistaken for a man named George Kaplan.

For a North by Northwest reimagination for the 2020s, actors like Jason Isaacs or Jon Hamm could bring a fresh perspective to the story of being on the run from the police and foreign spies. English actor Isaacs possesses the same debonair charm and wit as did Grant, while Hamm’s charisma and classic era looks were already established during his time with the tv drama Mad Men.

Gone with the Wind (1939)

It would be a true challenge to match Clark Gable‘s timeless portrayal of the Southern gentleman Rhett Butler who consorts with Northerners during the American Civil War.

One actor who has a similar roguish charm and undeniable magnetism as Gable did back in the day in today’s cinema is George Clooney. With his classic good looks, effortless charisma, and proven track record in both romantic and dramatic roles, Clooney could bring contemporary star power to the role while staying true to its original roots.

Thomas Crown Affair (1968)

Yes, the movie about the enigmatic billionaire Thomas Crown already has been remade in the late 1990s when Pierce Brosnan took the role originally made famous and eternally cool by Steve McQueen.

For an adaptation for audiences in 2024, charismatic yet complex actors like Ryan Gosling or Scott Eastwood could be great choices for the story of trying to pull off a multi-million dollar heist. They would certainly bring their own spin on the role, differentiating it from what movie fans have seen before.

Rear Window (1954)

Yet another Alfred Hitchcock classic that potentially could translate well as a remake for modern audiences. Yet the big question is who could match Grace Kelly‘s elegant and graceful portrayal of socialite Lisa Fremont?

We think that Lily James would be a perfect fit to bring a contemporary reimagination to the role of L. B. “Jeff” Jefferies’s girlfriend. With James’ ability to convey complex acting performances while looking naturally beautiful, she really could re-capture the sophistication and intelligence necessary for this role.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

While everyone is aware of Audrey Hepburn‘s iconic portrayal of Holly Golightly, not everyone has actually seen the romantic comedy. That is the sort of timeless acting performance she brought to the role. Which actress would be able to reinterpret the glamour and vulnerability this iconic role is so known for? We think the film industry audition process would be best served to choose Anne Hathaway. She would be a great fit as the naive and eccentric society girl due to possessing similar grace and elegance as Hepburn, along with the acting range necessary to fully capture the role’s complexity.
