The 11 Best Tinted Sunscreens

Keeping sunscreen on hand is one thing, but actually remembering to apply it daily proves far more difficult. Since daily SPF is a must for healthy, protected skin, finding a formula you like is essential, and those that double as makeup can help incentivize you to use them. Tinted sunscreens are the sun-shielding multitaskers that add complexion-boosting pigment into the mix. They add a subtle glow to your skin while protecting it from sun damage simultaneously.

Tinted sunscreens are often mineral-based (otherwise known as physical sunscreens) with filters such as zinc oxide. Board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology Geeta Yadav, MD says this type of sunscreen is often formulated with titanium dioxide as well, an ingredient that has antimicrobial properties, and, “could conceivably boost the SPF benefits of the [tinted sunscreen] as well as help keep skin clear.”

The tinted sunscreen recommendations below work as foundation, skin tints, and SPF. “There are tinted sunscreens for every skin type and concern, so you’ll have options, whether you’re looking for something hydrating and super sheer or [a tinted sunscreen] that will provide full coverage without congesting pores,” confirms Dr. Yadav.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Coverage: A richly tinted sunscreen can influence how much product you apply in the first place. But as Dr. Yadav reminds us, “Just make sure you’re applying enough — that you’re using it as SPF first, makeup second.” Dr. Yadav recommends applying at least half a teaspoon of SPF to cover the face and neck. If that sounds like a lot, try an ultra-sheer formula with lightweight consistency.
  • Skin Concerns: Individuals with melasma and sun-sensitive conditions such as rosacea can best find solace in tinted sunscreen formulas. Because these conditions are exacerbated by sun and blue light exposure, as Dr. Ibrahim previously mentioned, “Tinted sunscreens usually include mineral-based ingredients like titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and zinc oxide. These ingredients protect from not just UV light, but also from visible and infrared light that can still cause aging and photodamage.”
  • Reapplication: Dr. Yadav isn’t against reapplying tinted sunscreen throughout the day, though if in case you’re wearing a full face of makeup and don’t want to mess with bronzer and blush placement, Dr. Yadav says, “I recommend applying a powder SPF on top of your makeup when you need to reapply.”
