What to Keep in Mind
- Coverage: A richly tinted sunscreen can influence how much product you apply in the first place. But as Dr. Yadav reminds us, “Just make sure you’re applying enough — that you’re using it as SPF first, makeup second.” Dr. Yadav recommends applying at least half a teaspoon of SPF to cover the face and neck. If that sounds like a lot, try an ultra-sheer formula with lightweight consistency.
- Skin Concerns: Individuals with melasma and sun-sensitive conditions such as rosacea can best find solace in tinted sunscreen formulas. Because these conditions are exacerbated by sun and blue light exposure, as Dr. Ibrahim previously mentioned, “Tinted sunscreens usually include mineral-based ingredients like titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and zinc oxide. These ingredients protect from not just UV light, but also from visible and infrared light that can still cause aging and photodamage.”
- Reapplication: Dr. Yadav isn’t against reapplying tinted sunscreen throughout the day, though if in case you’re wearing a full face of makeup and don’t want to mess with bronzer and blush placement, Dr. Yadav says, “I recommend applying a powder SPF on top of your makeup when you need to reapply.”
