What to Wear in 70-Degree Weather

Every year, my Central New Yorker self eagerly counts down to spring and summer. And every year, I forget just how difficult dressing for warmer weather can be. And when I say “warmer,” what I really mean is “warm.” Hot weather? Arguably a bit easier to dress for. Throw on a breezy dress or a pair of shorts and a short-sleeve top. But warm weather? Say, 70-degree weather? Well, that’s another story.

When the temperature is 70, it’s incredibly comfortable; not too hot and not too cold. It also presents a styling enigma—hitting just a little bit differently depending on your geographic location and just how fully the sun is shining. While some of us can shed those lingering winter layers entirely (goodbye jackets and cardigans, hello summer), there are definitely still those among us who cling onto lighter outer layers as our 70-degree days start with 55-degree mornings and end in 60-degree evenings.

Whether 70 equates to the height of summer for you, or you’re still looking for some goosebumping-fighting coverage, here are 10 outfit formulas to reach for when the temperature is falling at this optimal—yet stylistically elusive—degree.

A Button-Up Shirt + Jean Shorts

Two is better than one, as the old adage goes, and the opinion certainly rings true for summer fashion staples. A classic button-up and a pair of jean shorts you adore are both pieces that will remain stylish until the end of time. Naturally, they play well together. Either short or long-sleeve options work well in this weather, depending on if you’re one to run hot or someone who easily catches a chill.

A Tee + Maxi Skirt + Sneakers

Sambas paired with a cheetah print maxi or midi skirt is an outfit combo the Instagram algorithm is serving up on repeat—and, clearly, no one’s tired of it yet. A longer hemline provides leg cover so you’re not too cold, but is also breezy enough so that, when the sun warms up in the afternoon, you don’t find yourself sweltering. A tee keeps the ensemble in the realm of “casual cool.”

A Short Sleeve Lace Top + Gingham Pants

A short-sleeve lace top speaks to warm weather while a pair of playfully patterned pants (such as those in gingham) keeps the outfit practical for warm-not-hot days. Breeze into the office wearing this combo, confidently hitting on the fashions of the season while remaining compliant to dress code.

A Vest + Pull-On Pants

Lightweight pull-on pants are incredibly comfortable, particularly in early summer. Vest tops have been particularly trendy for the past year and are a polished way to dress when a blouse or button-up feels too constricting.

A Matching Set + Sneakers

I’m personally a huge fan of the long-sleeved top and short set. The combo is easy but put-together, while sneakers keep the ‘fit convenient for hustling—whether it be making moves at work or checking off your to-do list on the weekend.

A Graphic Tee + Cardigan + Boxer Shorts

Capitalize on the comfort and convenience of two recent trends by pairing a graphic tee with boxer shorts. If you tend to get chilly, or are styling for a day of fluctuating temperatures, a cardigan on top can ward off goosebumps. Tall boots paired with shorts is a reliable win because it almost always catches passersby unaware and is particularly well suited for 70-degree days. Cowgirl boots nod a hat to both the Eras and Cowboy Carter movements.

A Sleeveless Sweater + Wide Leg Jeans + Sandals

If you’re like me and love a good sweater year-round, be sure to add a sleeveless option to your wardrobe for those couldn’t-ask-for-better-weather days. Wide-leg jeans and sandals keep the outfit effortless and chic.

A T-Shirt + Trousers

Trousers are a year-round staple and—when paired with a polished tee—can seamlessly stake their claim in the spring and summer seasons. For extra breathability, reach for a linen or linen-blend pant. The outfit pairs well with a raffia bag, loafers, and freshly shucked oysters.

A Long Sleeve Button-Up + Mini Skirt

A long-sleeved button-up styled with a playful skort or ruffled mini skirt is one of my own personal favorite combos for work-from-home days. It’s professional for Zoom meetings while remaining comfortable for romping around the house or running mini errands throughout the day. The striking corporate meets feminine juxtaposition is also one that never gets old.

In the height of the afternoon of a bright, sunny, 70-degree day, full-on summer clothing can feel very welcome and, for folks such as myself, necessary. Graphic tees are currently trending and can feel even more fashionable when styled with a skirt. Elevate the outfit with an unexpected shoe swap—reaching for clogs in place of anticipated sandals.
